Founded in 1952, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was named Beijing Aviation Academy. It was formed by the aviation departments of eight institutions including Tsinghua University, Beiyang University, Xiamen University and Sichuan University. In April 1988, it was renamed Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 1989, it became one of the 14 key universities in the country during the Eighth Five-Year Plan period. It entered the “211 Project” in the first batch, entered the “985 Project” in 2001, and was selected into the “Double-Class” construction list in the country in 2017.
As of April 2018, the School College Road and Shahe Campus covers an area of more than 3,000 acres; there are 30 secondary colleges under the school; there are 20 post-doctoral research stations, 23 doctoral degrees authorized first-level disciplines, and 40 master's degrees.
